Right now I am in a speech class, and one of our assignments is to give a descriptive speech. I am really happy with how the manuscript turned out, so I've decided to share it here. The story is loosely based on my hike up the Schilthorn Mountain in the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps (see my previous blog post titled "My Favorite Place in the World"). In reality, we were never in a dangerous situation, nor was I alone. It was actually an amazing experience, climbing up to the top of this mountain! Enjoy.
While walking over the damp ground, through the dewy air, I see a circular building on the peak of a mountain. It is this building that I am slowly nearing, one step at a time, one breath at a time, one thought… at this time: to get to the top of the mountain before this peak becomes too high to reach. An equilibrium here must be met. Straining muscles becoming further prevalent at every meter crossed, yet gleaming hope increasing at a teetering equivalency. If my physical body overcomes my mind, I may never step inside this circular building only visible amongst the smoky clouds encapsulating the air.
At each moment, my stomach screams for food. Fueled off of a few slices of bread from breakfast, I am starting to realize what the possibility of failure might entail. I listen to carefully comprehend the situation I am in. All I hear is the whirling wind against my icy ears and the sound of my own two feet slowing… slowing… stopping. I am running out of time. Each second I spend standing… falling to my knees is a second I could have spent nearing closer to the end… the positive end.
My mind takes over again, and I am lifted up onto my feet. I look up at the building, dizzy from physical exhaustion. I gaze at the peak, starting to see double, until I notice something near me: five round stones stacked unnaturally on top of one another, captured within the iced-over snow. My mind slowly encases the relic and its meaning. A different person, on this same path, had enough energy within to put forth extra effort and create a figurine representing strength, perseverance, and hope. And with that, I inhaled a fresh breath of cool air, stood up straight, aligned my dream with the journey ahead, and took another step.
